Portugal's gaming regulation and inspection service publishes the legal framework for online play, the Regime Jurídico dos Jogos e Apostas Online

approved by Decree-Law 66/2015 of 29 April, which governs the operation and the playing of online games and bets in the country. Its stated aims include keeping play in a controlled and reputable environment, combating illegal gambling, encouraging responsible play and protecting minors and vulnerable people. Licences are open to private companies formed as public limited companies seated in the European Union or the European Economic Area, with a Portuguese branch if foreign; they may be sought at any time, are unlimited in number, and run three renewable years.
